Health Canada expanded recall Panasonic lithium-ion battery packs pre-installed on various models of Toshiba laptops.

The recall battery packs was installed on various models of Toshiba Portege, Satellite, Satellite Pro, and Tecra Laptops. These battery packs were also sold as accessories and used as replacement parts for laptops under warranty.

The battery packs can overheat, posing a potential burn or fire hazard.

As of January 4, Toshiba Canada has received no reports of burn or fire incidents or injuries. In the United States, the company has received five reports of the battery pack overheating and melting, with no reports of injuries.

In March 2016, Health Canada recalled these battery packs, but the organization is doing another recall because these packs have been sold until November 2016.

More than 10,000 Panasonic battery packs were contained in Toshiba laptop computer or sold separately as accessories or replacements parts in Canada from June 2011 through November 2016.

Consumers can use the Toshiba Product Information Tool on the Toshiba website to automatically detect and display their laptop model and serial number and then check whether their battery pack is affected.

If your laptop contains an affected battery pack, you should immediately turn off your laptop and remove the battery pack following the instructions of Toshiba's support webpage. You can continue to use your Toshiba laptop without the battery packs by plugging into AC power.
